Artists for "piracy"

So in light of recent events i've down some reflecting on what this means going forward given that we stopped SOPA but people still feel the need to have more protection for online content.

1. I support piracy. Why? Cause we live in a new world where we have access to the tools to turn our dreams into reality and the model of the new world is that i can reach an unthinkable amount of people without the need of a traditional middle man.

2. I believe in building a community and trusting them. What does this mean? That i give away my music because i believe that you enjoy what i do you'll feel the compeled to support what i do so that i can spend as much time as possible doing it. Which is a very true reflection for myself personally because given that i produce and write for others in a wide variety of genres, what resonates more with the community will mean that i'll focus on that more generally speaking.

3. I strongly believe that freedom of information can solve almost all our problems if not all in one way or another. Following that line of thinking, i think inspiration should be free as well. If someone downloads my music without compensating me for it guess what? I've done my job, if music is a language i just want people to hear my voice and because i believe my voice has value to some i trust that there are enough people who get something out of that to allow me to continue.

4. Why would anyone protect a model that since the turn of the 80s has done very little to encourage career artists to flourish. The model of the 50-60-70s doesn't exist anymore. A&R folk could see potential in a band 2-3 records down the line and then supported them because they could see them growing into something great. Record labels are nothing more than glorified banks who see a trend and jump on it and think that people want 20 different version of lady gaga… and since they can't or don't know how to build a dedicated community around that artist, they go for safe bet economically that says that this is close enough to what's trending therefor we're taking less or a risk introducing something close to that then to put out something that's taking a chance.

5. With the amount of new tech out there and the ability for more and more people to create music it's more important than ever to make yourself be available so people can hear you. Whatever it takes to do that. That's the new model trust that your content is good enough to stack up, if it's not… make it better! That's to me what a lot of the push from hollywood is about, they know that with all these tools, we don't need them anymore and that has them a lil frightened to say the least.

6. I believe that i should approach what i do much as a developer approaches writing code. Since i've been on G+ i've had my preconceived notions about developers flipped upside down. They are some of the most creative and dedicated people i know and they're approach to giving back to the community is something i feel as though musicians can learn a lot from.

I realize the quote underneath was not intended to be used in this context, but you can draw so interesting parallels from it.
